The post about the stool makeover was waiting on the “to do” list for an entire year, but here it is at last!
I finished this stool a year ago but the photos of the final effect were made this year, therefore I think this is the best proof that my efforts were not in vain and that the stool can withstand the test of time and general everyday usage :)

Post ze stołkiem czekał (rok!), ale w końcu przyszedł jego czas.
Jako, że projekt został skończony rok temu, a zdjęcia efektu ostatecznego są już z tego roku, jest dowód na to, że moje wysiłki nie poszły na marne i mebel jest w stanie wytrzymać upływ czasu i użytkowanie :)

The first photo shows the stool in its form before the makeover. On the closeup you can see that the legs were very shabby. The damaged seat was hidden under a chequered cloth. After general inspection I was able to plan most of my work. Two of the most important things to do were: fixing the damaged seat and polishing the bottom of the stool – legs and crossbars.

Pierwsze zdjęcie ukazuje stołek w wersji pierwotnej. Na zbliżeniu widać odrapane nóżki. Kraciasty materiał przykrywał zużyte i uszkodzone siedzisko. Po wstępnych oględzinach mogłam od razu zaplanować część prac, z których najważniejsze to: naprawa uszkodzonego siedziska i dokładne wyszlifowanie dolnej części stołka – nóżek i poprzeczek.


I started with repairing the broken seat. The best solution here would be to replace all of the old planks forming the seat with new ones. Unfortunately, I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to cut the planks in the appropriate shape and/or make suitable holes to insert the legs.

Because this was the first furniture makeover project I chose an easier solution :) I found a piece of plywood, traced the shape of the seat on it and cut it using a circular saw. It's hard to cut rounded shapes with a circular saw, therefore I had to round the edges of the seat with an angle grinder. At this stage I didn't refine the details, because I knew that after gluing the plywood to the old seat I'd have to grind everything.

Zaczęłam od naprawy siedziska. Najlepiej byłoby wymienić wszystkie stare deski tworzące siedzisko na nowe, ale obawiałam się, czy będę w stanie sama wyciąć deski w odpowiednim kształcie i co ważniejsze – zrobić odpowiednie otwory do włożenia na miejsce istniejących nóżek.

Ponieważ to pierwszy taki projekt zdecydowałam się na łatwiejsze rozwiązanie :) Znalazłam kawałek czystej sklejki, odrysowałam kształt, który następnie został wycięty przy pomocy piły tarczowej. Ponieważ piłą tarczową ciężko jest wycinać obłości, zaokrągliłam wycięte siedzisko za pomocą szlifierki kątowej. Na tym etapie nie dopracowywałam detali, ponieważ wiedziałam, że po przyklejeniu sklejki do starego siedziska będę musiała wszystko wyszlifować.


By using a glue suitable for wood (Wikol) I glued the plywood to the seat.
I secured the plywood with special clamps. Placing additional wooden blocks between the clamps and the seat allows to distribute the force over a larger area and that gave me confidence that everything is going to be hold perfectly.

The next photo shows the stool with a repaired seat and ground legs :) Grinding was probably the hardest part of this makeover, because the stool had almost no flat surfaces (with the exception of the seat)... and rounded elements are the harder to clean. It would've been easier to use an electric grinder, but unfortunately power tools have their specific size and therefore they do not fit everywhere, so some elements had to be ground manually.

Za pomocą kleju do drewna (Wikol) przykleiłam sklejkę do siedziska.
Specjalnymi zaciskami docisnęłam obie części do siebie. Umieszczenie dodatkowych klocków drewnianych pomiędzy zaciskiem, a sklejanym siedziskiem umożliwia rozłożenie siły na większej powierzchni i dzięki temu miałam pewność, że wszystko się dobrze sklei.

Kolejne zdjęcie przedstawia już stołek ze sklejonym siedziskiem i wyczyszczonymi nóżkami :) Szlifowanie było chyba najcięższą częścią tej renowacji, ponieważ żaden element tego stołka (z wyjątkiem siedziska) nie jest płaski... a obłe elementy są najcięższe do czyszczenia. Łatwiej byłoby użyć szlifierki elektrycznej, ale niestety urządzenia elektryczne mają swoje określone gabaryty i nie wszędzie są wstanie dojść, stąd mimo wszystko, część elementów trzeba było wyczyścić ręcznie.


After fixing and cleaning the stool I was able to start painting it. I really wanted to preserve the natural appearance of the stool, therefore I decided to paint it with a transparent varnish. I noticed that old wood reacts slightly different to painting – even if the coating is transparent the wood darkens slightly. It is worth remembering for future projects.
The packaging of a varnish always contains information on how many layers of it should be applied – usually there should be 2-3 layers. After applying the first one you should wait until the surface is completely dry, then grind it gently and apply another one.
On my stool I applied two coats of varnish.

Po naprawieniu i dokładnym wyczyszczeniu stołka można było przystąpić do malowania. Ponieważ zależało mi na zachowaniu naturalnego wyglądu mebla do pomalowania wybrałam bezbarwny lakier satynowy. Zauważyłam, że stare drewno reaguje nieco inaczej na lakierowanie – nawet jeżeli lakier jest bezbarwny drewno delikatnie ciemnieje, warto o tym pamiętać przy następnych projektach.
Na opakowaniu lakieru zawsze jest napisane ile warstw preparatu należy nałożyć – z reguły są to 2-3 warstwy. Po nałożeniu pierwszej należy poczekać aż powierzchnia dokładnie wyschnie, następnie delikatnie przeszlifować i dopiero nakładać kolejne.
Na mój stołek nałożyłam dwie warstwy lakieru.


When the varnish has dried completely I secured the legs of the stool with masking tape above the height to which I wanted to paint them white. Before I applied the white paint I ground the legs with fine-grained sandpaper to make the paint stick better to the surface.

Voilà! :) The end. The stool is refurbished and ready to use at home for many years to come.

Kiedy lakier porządnie wysechł zabezpieczyłam nóżki taśmą malarską powyżej wysokości, do której chciałam pomalować je białą farbą. Zanim nałożyłam białą farbę delikatnie przeszlifowałam nóżki drobnoziarnistym papierem ściernym, aby farba dobrze pokryła powierzchnię.

Voilà! :) Efekt końcowy. Stołek odświeżony i gotowy do używania w domu jeszcze przez wiele lat.
